Sandy Springs Blotter: Husband Shot, Wife Tied Up In Home Invasion

Editor’s note: the following incidents were taken from the Sandy Springs Police Department’s weekly Wrap Up compiled by Capt. Steve Rose, which contains some — not all — of the incidents that occurred Dec. 10-17:

Robbery

  • 7525 Roswell Road, 30350, 12/15: A man said he was at the Publix parking lot around 8:30 p.m. when a silver/blue car pulled up. A man got out, pulled a knife, took the man’s passport and $200 and left.
  • 215 Northwood Drive, 30342, 12/17: A 28-year-old man said that around 1:18 a.m., he was leaving the night club when he was struck in the head from behind. Three men described as Hispanic males hit and kicked him, then took his wallet and cellphone and fled on foot. He was later taken to North Fulton Hospital with injuries to his head.
  • Spruce Bluff Drive, 30350, 12/17: Officers were called to a home around 9:40 p.m. on a reported home invasion. The caller said that a male came up to the home through a rear gated area where he pulled a gun on her (victim’s wife). The man tied the wife’s legs and hands and sat her down inside the home. The husband (victim) then arrived and upon entering from the patio area, he was shot in his thigh by the suspect, who then fled. The husband was treated at North Fulton Hospital for non-life threatening gunshot wound. The male suspect’s description was vague saying only that he had a black hoodie on. The caller said her cellphone and purse were taken.

  • 4000 block of Riverview, Road 30342, 12/10 (1920-2130): The resident reported someone forced entry through a rear glass door that was shattered by a rock. Jewelry was taken.
  • 500 block of Northridge Road, 30350, 12/11: Forced entry.
  • Old Virginia Chase, 30342, 12/13: The resident returned home from out of town around 9 p.m. When he entered his home, he found a man inside his home, hiding in the bathroom. The man pulled a weapon and ordered the resident to leave the home. The man then fled through a back window. The suspect took an antique watch, video camera, PS4 and a pistol. The victim retreated to the nearby wood line and called police. The suspect is a black male, 5’-9” to 5’-11” wearing all black.

Thefts (You know it’s almost Christmas with all the shoplifters. Read on....)

  • 5500 block of Kingsport Drive, 30342, 12/10: A 24-year-old man reported his 2007 Dodge Charger was stolen.
  • 6100 block of Peachtree Dunwoody Road, 30328, 12/11: A 38-year-old man reported his 2007 Escalade was stolen.
  • A high school freshman reported that she gave her friend a laptop to hold on to while outside in a freshman common area. The friend placed it on the bench and now it is gone.
  • CVS, 6330 Roswell Road, 30328, 12/12: A suspect, black male, 30-35 years old, wearing a UGA hoodie, accompanied by a black female, 5’-4” and about 130 pounds, 25-30 years old, stole several remote control toys.
  • 2090 Dunwoody Club Drive, 30350, 12/12: A man reported he left his wallet on the lotto machine counter and walked off. On return, it was gone. Video showed an older white male pick the wallet up and leave the store.
  • 5930 Roswell Road, 30328, 12/12 (Whole Foods): The manager said a man took an $18 bottle of wine and fled on foot. Also at Whole Foods, loss prevention staff observed a woman take two small boxes of facial cream products and went into the women’s bathroom only to reappear with the boxes. The staff found the boxes in the trash can so they detained the woman. She said she tested the product, but returned it. However she could not show where she returned it. She later admitted placing one of the tubes in her, well, hiding place. The second tube was found later and she was arrested for shoplifting.
  • Target, 5610 Roswell Road, 30342, 12/12: Loss prevention staff observed a man dressed as a woman, take two Beats Headphones -- valued at $199 each, -- unhook the wire ties, then concealed them and left. The subject got into a car as the police arrived. The subject then drove recklessly around the parking lot and then onto the road where he/she hit another car, then fled onto Kingsport Drive. The police initiated pursuit but quickly terminated it due to vehicle and pedestrian traffic. The car’s ID showed it registered to someone on Wendell Court in south Fulton County. That will be investigated.
  • CVS, Powers Ferry Road, 30339, 12/12: The employee said two men entered the store, took four remote controlled helicopters and left without paying.
  • 5580 Roswell Road, 30342, 12/12: A 31-year-old man said he left his wallet in a locker at Lifetime Fitness. Later he discovered that someone got into the locker, without force, and took the wallet and $625 cash. Capt. Steve Rose with Sandy Springs police says: Sorry for you loss sir but, if it’s not there, it’s not stolen.
  • 765 Hammond Drive, 30328, 12/13: An employee of Holiday Inn Express reported that a suspicious male removed food items from the hotel kitchen storage area. She saw him walking around in a suit, but carrying a plastic trash bag. She later saw the same man in workout clothes, acting as if he were helping other guests with whatever, and soon attempted to enter a locked food area door. The employee confronted him and he exited the hotel and got into a gray minivan and left.
  • A man reported on the 14th that he was at Northside Hospital’s Labor and Delivery area where his child was being born. He left some items including his wallet in the room assigned to his family. Later he discovered that his wallet was gone.
  • 900 block of Crestline Parkway, 30342, 12/15: A hotel guest reported that his room was ransacked and some items were taken.
  • 5670 Roswell Road, 30342, 12/15 (Taco Veloz): The manager said a man snatched the tip jar after putting a mask on his face. He then ran down towards Lake Placid Drive. Witnesses described him as a short black make, early twenties, 5’-6” and about 130 pounds.

  • 6500 block of Roswell Road, 30328, 12/14: Nothing taken

Assault

  • 6300 Powers Ferry Road, 30339, 12/11: Officers were called to the Publix store regarding a person who had been stabbed. The victim had non-life threatening cuts from another person, both of whom were employees. The suspect said the victim had been disrespectful. The suspect said he (suspect) was not well mentally, and was upset. The knife was a bread knife. The victim was taken to the hospital to be evaluated and the suspect was arrested for aggravated assault.
  • 900 block of Summit Place, 30350, 12/11: Cops responded to an apartment on a person stabbed call. They found a 30-year-old man in pain and bleeding from his mouth. The man told officers that he had gone to visit his family and upon return, his girlfriend was angry with him for being gone so long. She slapped him and then said she “had something for him” which turned out to be a knife. She stabbed him in the mouth causing him to bleed severely. She then fled in her car. Warrants are pending. The victim was transported to the hospital and will recover.
  • Powers Ferry Road and New Northside Drive, 30339, 12/12: Just before 2 a.m. officers met a woman who said that she had gotten into an argument with a friend named “Frankie” who picked her up from her job at Mardi Gras where she works as a dancer. While they were in the truck driving, Frankie punched her so she punched him back and the two began fighting. She kicked the window out and jumped from the car causing non-life threatening injuries. That case was turned over to detectives.

Other Things

  • A 17-year-old man on Franklin Road reported on the 10th that someone called his home and said, “I’m going to make sure you keep your nose out of other people’s business, I have you in check, and I know your address and vehicle description.” He told the officer he has no idea who this is.
  • A woman reported she was in her car at the Kroger parking lot on Sandy Springs Place when it was hit twice by a shopping cart. She got out, told the other woman who was in (sort of) control of the cart to wait until she looked for damage. The woman got into a white Land Rover and drove away. She did get the tag.

Fraud

  • A 52-year-old man reported his credit card number had been used in Virginia three times for just over $300.
  • A 44-year-old man said someone opened an AT&T account in his name.
  • A 23-year-old woman reported she was a victim of a “Secret Santa” scam. She was recruited by a James Heredia by phone and was later mailed a check for “future services” in the amount of $993. It is not clear if she had yet spent her own money before the bank notified her the check was fraudulent. Along those same lines....
  • A 21-year old woman was looking on Craigslist for a job as a model and of course soon was contacted by a man who said he would send her a check for $2,650 to put into her account and to use for whatever expenses. She was instructed to send $2,200 of it to a third party which she did via two MoneyGram prepaid cards. She then found out the original check was fraudulent. Rose says: four words folks: WAIT TILL CHECK CLEARS.

Arrests

  • DUI: PDR and Central Park Drive, 30328, 12/10; 6851 Roswell Road, 30328, 12/12; and 400 and Glenridge Connector, 30342, 12/13.
  • On Dec. 10, Target employees stopped a man who stole a PS4 game system by removing the electronic do-dad that signals when you leave the store. He was arrested for the theft valued at $300.
  • That same day Target staff plucked off another thief when they got a man who took four bottles of cologne, valued at just over $180. He was arrested.
  • Not to be outdone, also on the 10th, Costco employees nabbed a woman who stole some Zyrtec and a bottle of Advil, then bought some other items and passed through after paying for them but not the meds. She was arrested.
  • Marshall’s, 5932 Roswell Road, 30328, 12/11: Store employees caught a man stealing store items totaling $297 and attempted to leave the store without paying. He was arrested.
  • 6800 block of Peachtree Dunwoody Road, 30328, 12/11: A 23-year-old man reported his car had been broken into and items including some Canadian coins and other items including his ID were taken. Later, Dunwoody police called and said they had an entering auto in progress call and arrested a juvenile at the scene nearby on Perimeter Center Parkway, just inside Dunwoody. The juvenile in question had the victim’s ID as well as other items showing possession of the victim’s property. The juvenile had other items on him tying him into other thefts. He provided a name of the other suspect. The case will be followed up in an attempt to find additional victims. The juvenile was taken to the Youth Detention Center in Atlanta pending court.
  • 8340 Roswell Road, 30350, 12/12: After handling a shoplifting call at the Kroger, the officer who took the report was at a nearby Shell station when he saw a man matching the description of the Kroger suspect. He spoke to the man, who appeared intoxicated, who said he had been to the Kroger. While talking to the man, he lifted his shirt reveling a DVD that the officer later determined was stolen from the Shell. The DVD was taken from the porn section of the Shell — something I did not know Shell offered. The man was later arrested.
