Sandy Springs Blotter Weekly Wrap Up

Editor’s note: the following incidents were taken from the Sandy Springs Police Department’s weekly Wrap Up, which contains some — not all — of the incidents that occurred Feb. 15-19:

Robbery

  • 300 block of Winding River Drive, 30350, Feb. 17: The victim posted an online ad to sell a charm bracelet for $70. He was contacted by a young black male who met him on Winding River Drive. The man said he needed to be driven to another apartment to get the money. They went to the apartment where three other young black males were. While in the car, they robbed him of his phone, $43 cash, and the bracelet. They fled on foot. The Internet selling site was on Facebook and the victim identified the suspect as someone the officers are familiar with. That will be investigated.

Burglary

  • 1500 block of Huntcliff Village Court, 30350, Feb. 15: Between 12:30 a.m. and 10:30 a.m., someone broke into the apartment through a back window and took two 55-inch TV’s, cable and Internet boxes.
  • 1200 block of Hightower Trail, 30350, Feb. 16: A resident of an assisted living facility said someone took some of his handmade knives from his room.
  • 200 block of Windridge Drive, 30350, Feb. 16: Someone entered a vacant apartment. Nothing taken.
  • 2400 block of Monterrey Pkwy, 30350, Feb. 17: From 4 p.m. to 1 p.m. the following day, the victim said she was in jail for domestic violence charges and while in custody and according to her, the other party came in and took her laptop and ID.
  • 800 block of Jefferson Drive, 30350, Feb. 18: From 8:20 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., someone entered the apartment and took the victim’s MacBook Air and charger.
  • 6100 block of Powers Ferry Road, 30328, Feb. 19: Someone entered the locked gate to the Fulton County Schools construction site and took several items from a plumbing service locked storage box.
  • 500 block of Summer Drive 30350, Feb. 19: From 12 p.m. to 3:20 p.m., the resident said someone entered the apartment without force and took several items including a weapon and laptops. The victim said whoever stole them knew where to look in that they were not easily visible. He told the officer he knew of a suspect, a neighbor.

  • 100 block of Old Stratton Chase, 30328, Feb. 15: Mail (checks) was stolen from the mailbox. Two of the checks were later cashed, one for $1,127 and the other for $876.
  • 1165 Perimeter Center West, 30328, Feb. 17: The victim said someone took her purse and $40 while she was shopping at Goodwill. The staff found the purse and returned it. Her debit card was still in the purse.
  • 6420 Roswell Road, 30328, Feb. 18: A man said he left his cellphone on a table while he went to the restroom at the Flasher’s Dance Club. Someone took the $600 phone.

  • 250 Northridge, 30350, Feb. 15: Nothing taken
  • 6300 block of Roswell Road, 30328, Feb. 15: Nothing taken/failed attempt (*The owner of the truck said he had a Jimmy Jammer attached to his door handle. A Jimmie Jammer is a custom formed steel plate that bolts to the backside of your door handle, preventing thieves from prying into the handle seam or punching the lock cylinder into the door).
  • 5925 Roswell Road, 30328, Feb. 15: Nothing taken
  • 5665 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, 30342, Feb. 15: Ruger LCP .380 pistol
  • Serendipity Way, 30350, Feb. 15: Nothing taken (Unlocked car)
  • 5500 block of Roswell Road, 30342, Feb. 15: Credit cards, later used for just under $1,000
  • 6120 PDR, 30328, Feb. 16: Nothing taken
  • 700 block of Hammond Drive, 30328, Feb. 16: $800 cash, Beats headphones, clothing
  • 6120 PDR, 30328, Feb. 16: Football shoes and sunglasses

Fraud

  • 6000 block Roswell Road, 30328, Feb. 17: An office manager said she mailed an insurance check that was apparently intercepted by a man (who is identified and suspected) who tried to later cash it for $606.
  • A 59-year-old woman said she received a text from Amazon that her order was shipped. She didn’t have an Amazon account. Someone used her name and information to open an account and ordered an iPod.
  • A 36-year-old man reported his credit card was used at several business locations including Sports Authority, Chipotle and Home Depot.
  • A 35-year-old woman reported that she left her pocketbook at a friend’s home. She said the friend was “unknown,” whatever that means. She later got her pocketbook back minus her checkbook. Checks were later written (5) for various amounts, all under $100.
  • A staff member of Roaster’s Restaurant reported she was contacted on the phone by someone saying he was with Georgia Power and was calling about a $500 later payment. He said if the (victim) didn’t pay the bill in forty-five minutes via GreenDot Card, the electricity would be shut off. The employee told the man she could go to Smyrna and make the payment. He [Mr. Ramirez of GA Power] told her she could make the payment via the restaurant’s bank account. She called the accountant who, unfortunately, was in a meeting, and more unfortunately, assumed it was legit and Ok’d the transaction. The bank account information was given to Mr. Ramirez. The employee later called GA Power and was informed the call was a scam. They initiated the stop payment procedure. At the time of the report, they were not sure if the transaction was cancelled or not.

Assault

  • Homicide: 7103 Spalding Forest Court, 30350, Feb. 16: Officers responded to a medical call and found a 57-year-old woman dead in her bedroom. Her adult son was on the scene and told officers that he returned home from jogging to find two men inside the home who had assaulted his mother. The men assaulted him and fled on foot. The response and story by the victim’s son was given to detectives who interviewed the man. They found a number of inconsistencies in the story. The son, Patrick Tyson, was later charged with the murder. The victim died of stab wounds and blunt force trauma.
  • 1300 block of Huntcliff Village Court, 30350, Feb. 16: A 24-year-old woman said that she was on the phone when her sister tried to get her attention to discuss her claim that the apartment maintenance man apparently used the bathroom and didn’t flush. The sister continued to talk thus making the other sister angry and who later punched her in the face. She was later arrested on simple battery/family violence charges.

Other Things

  • Officers went to Santa Fe Parkway on February 18 and spoke with a 35-year old woman who said her roommate spit in her face.

Arrests

  • 8725 Roswell Road, 30350, Feb. 16: Publix security staff detained a woman after she took just under $30 in food items and left without paying for the items. She didn’t help her case when she initially gave the responding officer a fake date of birth. She was released pending court.
  • 6260 PDR (La Quinta Hotel), 30328, Feb. 18: Responding to a noise complaint, officers knocked on the hotel room door. The door slightly opened, then slammed shut. The occupants refused to open it. The officers and hotel manager could hear flushing and then glass breaking. The officers then ran outside and found several people trying to exit through a window. Several were taken into custody. Later, drug paraphernalia was located in the room.
