Sandy Springs Blotter: Man's Pistol Stolen From Waffle House Bathroom

Burglary

  • Glisten Avenue, 30328, Jan. 12: Someone forced a front door open to the victim’s residence and took a Dell laptop, Kindle Fire in a pink case and a Barnes and Noble Nook.
  • 5675 Roswell Road, 30342, Jan. 12: Someone entered the apartment after breaking a bedroom window. Several items were taken from the apartment.
  • 24 Cedar Run, 30350, Jan. 13: Someone forced a sliding door to the victim’s apartment and took several cameras and some cash.
  • 500 block of Chestnut Rose Lane, 30328, Jan. 14: Between 7 a.m. and 10:51 a.m., someone forced a back door from the victim’s rear deck by throwing an iron plant pot holder through the door’s glass. Several items of jewelry were taken.

Thefts

  • Officers were called to Northside Hospital regarding suspicious person possibly attempting to steal from a vehicle. The responding officers determined the man was in the nearby MARTA lot and was seen going through a truck. The converged and had to fight with the suspect. The suspect managed to briefly escape and then jumped the fence to the tracks. The subsequent search was not successful. They found a Glock Pistol, taken from the truck, lying in the parking deck. There is no ID on the suspect at this time.
  • 8767 Roswell Road, 30350, Jan. 11: A woman said she was at Stars and Strikes and at some point got up and walked away from her table, leaving her iPhone behind. Ten minutes later, it was gone.
  • 5665 New Northside Drive, 30339, Jan. 12: A man said his car overheated and he pulled into the Chevron Station. While waiting for the car to be towed, he went across the road to the Waffle House. During that time, he went to the restroom and placed his Smith & Wesson .40 caliber semi-auto pistol on the toilet paper holder. After finishing up, he left—then remembered the gun, and returned. The gun was gone.
  • An employee of St. Johns Children’s School on Mt. Paran Road reported that someone took a laptop from the school. The doors were open at the time while a local singing group practiced which was within the time of the theft. The theft was picked up on the school’s video but, according to the report, the quality and camera angle were poor.
  • A 23- year old woman said someone stole two gift cards (Target and Kroger) for $50 each from her box at the community mailbox location within the Treelodge Parkway complex. The Target card had been used at the Perimeter location. She said the mailbox is improperly spaced so that the door can be partially opened.
  • 8725 Roswell Road, 30350, Jan. 12: A 77-year-old woman was shopping at Publix when someone took her purse. Store video shows a white male coming up to her cart as her back is to him. He lowers a bag into the cart, places the purse in the bag, and leaves. He is described as a white male, 30-40 years old wearing brown baseball hat, white t- shirt, black pullover jacket, gray athletic style pants and black sneakers. He had short brown hair, goatee and was average height and build.
  • 400 block of Brookfield Dr., 30328, Jan. 13: A 45-year-old man said his children’s Jenson Junior Electric Kid’s Bike was stolen from his carport.
  • Highland Bluff/Stoneridge Drive, 30328, Jan. 14: Around 7 p.m. a man, walking his dog, passed the community mailbox and saw several of the mailbox doors open. He recalled an internal memo regarding thefts. He then saw a male juvenile walking well after school hours, with a backpack. He stopped the kid and asked his name and told him why he was asking these questions. He saw an unopened package inside the backpack. The juvenile, age 14, said he lived in the complex and asked him not to call the cops. He dropped the backpack and ran off. That package and three other unopened packages were given to their owners.
  • 6201 Powers Ferry Road, 30339, Jan. 15: Someone accessed a construction site, removed some temporary fencing, cut a latch to the storage container that held 30 spools of industrial grade copper.
  • 400 block of Heards Ferry Drive, 30328, Jan. 15: The builder of a home said someone removed three AC units from the side of the home that is under construction. A backpack left at the scene contained gloves and a pipe cutter.

Fraud

  • A man on Harbor Pointe Pkwy said his girlfriend, now ex-girlfriend, transferred $1,300 from his to her account in two transactions. He since moved out until he can have her evicted.
  • A man reported that someone used his personal information to open an account with Western Union and withdrew $385 from his Delta Credit Union account.
  • A 62-year-old woman said someone accessed her personal information and opened an account with Verizon Wireless, then ran up a $1,300 bill. She had a suspect in mind, someone who ran up a Sam’s Club account in her name in 2012. He will go on the short list of suspects.
  • A 93-year-old woman was the victim of a fraud after receiving a call from a male who identified himself as her grandson. He said he was out of the country and had gotten into an accident and had broken his nose. He told her that she needed to go to Walgreen’s and get a Green Dot MoneyPak Card for $500. She took a cab ride ($25) and got the card for $500. Fortunately, her daughter found out and the card’s number has not been given to the suspect who was supposed to call later that night. The intended victim does not have a grandson.
  • 6615 Roswell Road, 30328, Jan. 13: A 29-year-old man said that he was approached by a white male in a black SUV who he, after speaking with the man, purchased an Axion A650 LED projector and screen for $325. After the man left, the victim looked it up on the Internet and found that this was part of an ongoing scam and the items had only a $60 value. The suspect was 29-30 years old, had a full beard and wore a Falcons skull hat. Capt. Steve Rose with Sandy Springs police says: Guys, don’t buy crap from street hockers selling stuff from a van or in this case, SUV. It’s a risk and chances are, you’ll have the inevitable “buyer’s remorse” in just a short time. If the deal seems just too good to be true, it usually is.
  • A 73-year-old man said someone attempted to open an account with Barclay Card MC in Florida using his personal information. During that time, someone also attempted to open a Sprint account. The request was from someone at 8441 Sheridan Drive in Miramar, FL 33025.

Assault

  • 227 Sandy Springs Place, 30328, Jan. 12: An employee of a dental office said she asked one of the employees to sign a time sheet which, for some reason sparked a negative response from the employee. This complainant then left and while doing so, was confronted by the other woman who “waved her hand in front of her face and struck her twice on the nose.” The complainant wants to prosecute her.
  • A woman reported she and her boyfriend were at Hudson Grill watching the Ohio State / Oregon college playoff game. She began talking with a male whom she had attended college with. Her boyfriend became angry saying she kissed the dude. This caused an argument so she said she would have her female friend take her home. The boyfriend then launched his drink glass at her, striking her in the head. The boyfriend ran away. He later texted her “Do what you gotta do.”

Other Things

  • On Jan. 10 Grady Hospital notified SSPD that they were treating a gunshot wound to a man who said that he was in Sandy Springs at the time he was shot. He said he went to party after exiting from I-285 into Sandy Springs. He said he was at the party and at about 4 or 4:30 pm he and the others heard about five gunshots. He and the other ran when he felt a pain in his thigh. He realized he had been shot in the inner thigh. His friends drove him to Grady Hospital. Based on the information, officers have no idea where this may have occurred. ChatComm has no record of a 9-1-1 “discharging firearms” or other call regarding a loud party.
  • Street Crimes Unit detectives met with the resident at 1039 Brentwood Way regarding a previous theft from a Chinese delivery employee. While at the residence, they spoke with an 11-year-old child who was left in custody of an 11-month old child while the mother was at work. Detectives called the mother advising her that they had come to execute a search warrant. Finding the unattended children, they notified DFCS to follow up. The 11-year old said they had eaten Chinese food the night before. Evidence was left indicating it was the same as was stolen. Subsequently, another juvenile from this apartment was later charged with the theft.
  • Detectives have a suspect taken from the evidence and tag number obtained by the victim in a Jan. 7 report of indecent exposure at the Sandy Springs Library at 395 Mt. Vernon Hwy. The information led to a suspect with a long history of similar arrests. A warrant is forthcoming.

Arrests

  • Sandy Springs Place, 30328, Jan. 10: Officers went to a home regarding a noise complaint. The man at the house said he was yelling because his girlfriend was mad at him because she thought he bought flowers and a teddy bear for another woman. The man agreed to knock off the nose. A half-hour later, they received another call and the man was arrested.
  • Chris Appleton, convicted of two burglaries on Spring Creek Lane, was convicted in Fulton County Superior Court and is expected to serve two years. The case detective is Detective Jonathan Williams.
  • Cops were called to the Hyatt Hotel on Crestline Parkway around 4:30 am regarding guests being removed from the room and hotel. They arrived and spoke to a group of people who were loud. One in particular, a woman who continued to ignore the officer’s request to lower her voice, finally threw her belonging across a desk at the front desk area. She was then arrested. While securing the woman in the patrol car, officers saw another woman jump on and punch yet another woman. The two hit the floor punching and pulling hair until the officers separated them. They determined one of the women was the aggressor and she too was arrested. Finally one of the members of the group who had not been drinking, said they would drive the surviving members of the group home or whatever as long as it was “away.”
  • 8725 Roswell Road, 30350, Jan. 12: A 17-year old student at North Springs High School was arrested following a shoplifting at the Publix store. The suspect took three boxes of nasal decongestant, Coricidin, and tried to leave without paying. At first he said he had a sick relative however that story didn’t pass the smell test and he eventually said he did it to make some money.
  • 6300 block of Roswell Road, 30328, Jan. 12: A patrol officer spotted a car driving at night with no lights. He stopped the car and while talking to the driver, smelled marijuana. He cited the man for misdemeanor marijuana and driving without lights. Another driver was summoned.
