Sandy Springs Cultural Center Gains Approval

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — The Sandy Springs Public Facilities Authority (PFA) provided approval for a resolution supporting the development of a cultural center in the city of Sandy Springs, in partnership with the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust (Commission). The Resolution, approved during the July 16 meeting, endorses the cultural center project moving forward based on the Commission obtaining funding milestones.

The PFA entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with the Commission and Sandy Springs Hospitality and Tourism, Inc. (Visit Sandy Springs) in October 2018 to begin the process of developing design and construction considerations for a cultural center. The cultural center is envisioned as a facility, which will house exhibition space for the Anne Frank in the World Exhibit, additional public exhibitions, as well as offices for the Commission, Visit Sandy Springs and the Sandy Springs / Perimeter Chamber.

The Commission committed an estimated contribution towards upfront capital anticipating raising those funds through efforts by Friends of the Georgia Holocaust Commission, Inc. (Friends), a Georgia non-profit created to support and enhance a Holocaust Memorial authorized by the Georgia legislature, to further exhibitions and to educate the public about the historical lessons learned from the Holocaust. The Resolutions is supportive of those fundraising efforts.

The design firm, Houser Walker Architecture, worked with the PFA and its partners to develop preliminary designs, from which allocated space needs and cost-share estimates were formed. Plans will be refined as the project develops. The Cultural Center will reside in the City Springs district, but a definitive location has not been determined. Following the Resolution, the PFA is authorized to enter into an agreement with the Commission on terms and conditions necessary to continue furtherance of the project.
