2018 MLK Day Celebration Set For Jan. 15 (ICYMI)

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — The city of Sandy Springs on Monday will host its annual tribute to Civil Rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. The city's event will be held at 10 a.m. Jan. 15 at a new location: Heritage Sandy Springs.

The event will celebrate the spirit of Dr. King and reflect the diversity of the community, and this year's commemoration will acknowledge community members who make a difference in the lives of children.

These unsung heroes are the volunteers who donate countless hours to the Sandy Springs Mission, an organization dedicated to helping and inspiring the city's less fortunate children. Attendees are encouraged to bring a children’s book (early reader to young adult) to the event, which will be donated to the organization.

"Dr. King believed that even the smallest amount of encouragement and support to help someone matters," said Mayor Rusty Paul. "It is fitting that we use this day to acknowledge the many who give of themselves by volunteering and at the same time, inform the community on opportunities where they, too, can get involved."

Sandy Springs businessman Oz Hill returns as emcee. Hill is the principal and CEO of International Security Solutions Inc., a full-service security consulting, planning and program management corporation. Pastor Henry Bush of Sharon Community United Methodist Church will provide inspirational thoughts and the challenge for all to continue Dr. King’s essential work. Both men have been a part of the city’s MLK Day Celebration since its inception.
