Sandy Springs Man Charged With Trying To Kill Wife

Police say the man attacked his estranged wife while she was sleeping, forcing her to flee the apartment from a second-story balcony.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- A Sandy Springs man has been charged with trying to kill his estranged wife, who had to jump from the second-story balcony to flee the attack.

Mitchell Jerome Lott, 57, was arrested Monday and charged with a slew of offense, including aggravated assault with the intent to murder, aggravated battery, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, first degree home invasion, criminal attempt to commit arson, battery and felony theft by taking.

Police became aware of the incident when they were dispatched around 4 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 to an apartment unit on Greyfield Lane, which is located off North River Parkway east of Roswell Road.

Officers arrived on the scene and met with the victim, who said she was asleep in her bed when she was attacked by Lott, according to an incident report released by the Sandy Springs Police Department.

The woman recounted to police she was hit in her head and along her body, and she picked up a hammer and struck her attacker with it.

After hitting the attacker, she told police she "ran out to her second story balcony where she stated that she escaped over the second story balcony."

"It was unclear to me whether she was thrown, forced or jumped voluntarily off the balcony," the report states. "She has visible abrasions with bruising on her right knee and complained of neck pain from the fall."

After making the rough landing, she ran to a nearby unit for help. The victim's gray 2013 Nissan Altima was also stolen during the attack, the incident report states.

A canvassing of the woman's apartment showed "visible signs of a struggle, with a broken door and large amounts of blood on floors and walls," the report notes.

Additionally, a full gas can and a knife with a black handle was located inside the apartment. The victim was transported to North Fulton Hospital for treatment.

Lott's whereabouts soon became apparent when officers were informed that Newton County sheriff's deputies responded to a suspicious person call within its jurisdiction. According to the report, Lott "showed up to his ex-wife's house in Newton County covered in blood and in a vehicle that she did not recognize."

"He stated that he had been in a bar fight and needed to stay with her," the report adds.

The tag on the car came back registered to the woman attacked during the assault, and Sandy Springs police issued warrants for Lott's arrest.

Lott was arrested Monday, and booked into the Fulton County Jail where he remains held without bond.
