Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, falls on Thursday, April 16.
There are several events taking place in the metro area, most including survivors and a retelling of their stories, so that we don’t forget Nazi Germany’s systematic effort to exterminate Jews.

With survivors now in their 70s and older, preserving those stories is even more important.
With this in mind, the city of Sandy Springs and The Weber School worked together this year, with students hosting a number of Holocaust survivors in their classrooms, the conversation between students and survivors, with those sessions captured on video.

The city’s community HaShoah program, which takes place at 9 a.m. Thursday, April 16 at The Weber School, will feature a student-produced video, sharing those first-hand accounts from surivivors, including Dr. John Galambos, husband of Sandy Springs Mayor Emeritus Eva Galambos.
Dr. Galambos was born in Budapest, Hungary. At the start of the war, Galambos was transported to a Hungarian Labor Camp. Later, he was transferred to Bergen Belsen concentration camp in Germany, until liberated by U.S. troops. He was reunited with his father, but his mother and other relatives did not survive.
The city plans to provide links to the videos following the program, to help further the education program throughout the community.
The Weber School is at 6751 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.
