Sandy Springs Police Cruiser Damaged In Suspected Arson

The Sandy Springs Police Department is investigating a suspected case of arson to one of its marked patrol vehicles.

The vehicle was discovered early Monday morning with a towl stuffed into the tube leading to the car’s fuel tank, said spokesperson Sgt. Ron Momon.

“Someone set the towel on fire after it was shoved into the tube,” he added.

The 2011 Ford Crown Victoria was stationed in a secured parking deck at 1160 Hammond Drive. According to an incident report released by the agency, the officer arrived at his assigned patrol vehicle around 6:15 a.m. and noticed the flap covering the gas cap was open.

The fire caused moderate damage to the left rear corner, and forced the gas cap to fall onto the ground and melt.

The police department has requested the assistance of the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Anyone with information in this case should also call Crime Stoppers Atlanta at 404-577-TIPS or 404-577-8477.

Residents with information do not have to give their name or any identifying information to be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000.
