Sandy Springs Police Team Up With Students To Curb Car Break-Ins

North Springs Charter High School students recently created a public service announcement to combat the recent uptick in entering autos.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- To help put a dent in the recent spike in car break-ins throughout the city, the Sandy Springs Police Department is joining forces with local students to help with its endeavors.

The agency recently partnered with North Springs Charter high School to create a public service announcement advising residents to remove valuables from and to lock the doors of their vehicles.

“In a majority of these car break ins, the victims left valuables visible and car doors unlocked," said Sandy Springs Police Chief Ken DeSimine. "The video provides SSPD with another option to remind our residents to take valuables with them when they leave their vehicles and lock up."

Community officers met with the students in the school’s film department where the concept of the video took shape. The students worked with the police department to develop the concept, followed by filming and editing the video.

While the project resulted in the video, DeSimone stressed the initiative wasn't the only benefit awarded to the agency.

“The project provided a great opportunity for our officers to learn from the students and their perspective on a high-profile issue," he added. "They were able to develop a great relationship which I think benefitted all who were involved.”

Sandy Springs police will utilize the video during crime prevention presentations, and also showcase it on social media outlets such as Facebook and YouTube.
