Sandy Springs Resident, Coach Publishes Second Book

"Rock Bottom" is a collection of essays that focus on life growing up in Georgia.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Sandy Springs resident and Holy Innocents’ employee Dunn Neugebauer has done it again – he has written his second book released in early November titled Rock Bottom, Then Up Again. It is available on Amazon.

Rock Bottom is a collection of 70 essays, many of which are about HIES students, growing up in Georgia, and his current life as an Atlanta resident. The original idea came by accident about eight months ago, while Dunn was trying to pen the “Great American Novel.”

“I couldn’t think of a word regarding the novel, so every day I would write an essay until the inspiration hit,” he added. “Four months later, I had 93 essays and not one word of the novel. I started thinking, maybe writing essays is my thing.”

He says his new book is “Rated G,” with the essays taking on a spiritual, humorous or sports-related tone. “If the three met, then all the better,” he said.

He added it’s an easy read – each essay is around two-to-three pages long with few exceptions, and he went through the entire manuscript in less than two hours while editing.

If your curiosity is piqued, perhaps some of the back-cover copy can give the potential reader a better idea of the book. “You don’t have to be sitting in a church to find spirituality, nor do you have to be in a classroom to get education. Life lends a hand, if you let it and this book shows you that miracles, happiness and adventures can find you in the strangest of times and in the most off-the-wall places.

“Enough said, onward, the bell just rang. Class is in session.”

Dunn is the sports communications man at Holy Innocents’, though he also coaches cross-country and track, subs in the Upper School, works carpool and is the color commentator for the Golden Bear football games. He can be found on the Sandy Springs campus virtually anywhere, except ironically in his own office.

He wrote for the Neighbor Newspapers throughout most of the 90s before temporarily moving to Florida, where he covered sports for the Tampa Tribune, the St. Pete Times and the Palm Beach Post. He has been at Holy Innocents’ since 2007.

His first book, titled Funny Conversations with God – an Uncalled-for Dialogue, was released in 2012 and is also still available. When times allows while juggling his roles at Holy Innocents’, he is already at work on his third book.
