Sandy Springs Updates Non-Discrimination Policy

The change comes just months after Councilman Andy Bauman pushed for the city to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA -- The city of Sandy Springs has taken a step to ensure its employees as well as applicants will have the opportunity to work in an environment free from prejudice.

The city has updated its non-discrimination policy. City Manager John McDonough announced the change at the City Council's June 7 meeting.

The new policy states: "The city provides equal opportunity to all employees and applicants for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender, national origin, age, disability, or military or veteran status, or any other status or classification protected by applicable federal, state and local laws. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including but not limited to, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, transfer, leave of absence, compensation, and training."

The update was accepted without objection by Mayor Rusty Paul and City Council members. It also comes roughly three months after Councilman Andy Bauman called on the city to adopt a formal policy prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Bauman praised the city's stance on the issue, adding McDonough did "exactly what I expected he would do: which was to thoroughly research the existing written policies and come back with recommendations to make them consistent with our city's nondiscriminatory practices."

"I was pleased that this was done and was not at all surprised that his recommendations were readily accepted by the mayor and council without objection," he said.
