Scam Alert: Police Say Landscapers Are Grossly Overcharging

If you plan on getting landscaping work done, there are a few steps you can take to make sure you're not getting ripped off.

SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Sandy Springs police are warning residents of a scam that has been reported to them several times lately. If you're getting landscaping work done, take heed.

Police describe the scam as landscapers offering to spread pinestraw for $4 per bale. "The homeowner agrees to this and the landscapers go to work," police say.

However, when they're finished, "the final bill is often several thousand dollars," police say.

The Sandy Springs Police Department recommends you take these steps to avoid such a scam:

  1. Use a reputable landscape company (one with references available)
  2. Get a written estimate before any work begins
  3. Make sure they know to inform you immediately if there will be an increase in cost
  4. Never pay up front - sometimes they ask for a deposit, but this is rare
  5. "If a deal sounds too goo to be true, well... you know the rest."
