A Seussical Day at School

Holy Innocents' celebrates Dr. Seuss, welcomes New York Times best-selling author, and gets ready for Read Across America Day.

Wednesday, March 2, is Dr. Seuss’ official birthday, but Lower School students at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School (HIES) celebrated the beloved children’s author/illustrator early on Friday, Feb. 26. Fifth-graders read Dr. Seuss books to their buddies in first grade, and students and faculty dressed up as their favorite Seussian characters. (Who can forget Things 1 and 2, Cindy Lou Who, Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat, or The Lorax?) Dr. Seuss bookmarks were also handed out in the Curtis Library Media Center, and students were treated to Green Eggs and Ham, along with red-and-white cupcakes at lunch.

Dr. Seuss, of course, was really author/illustrator Theodor Seuss Geisel who created such popular children’s book classics as “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Green Eggs and Ham,” and “The Cat in the Hat.” He is credited with forever changing the way children’s books were written and continues to inspire generations with his wit, whimsy, and unforgettable illustrations.

Another memorable children’s author/illustrator was celebrated at the HIES the last week of February: Henry Cole entertained first-through-third-graders in the Curtis Library on Feb. 24. Cole shared his thoughts on both writing and illustrating books before giving a presentation at Little Shop of Stories that evening in Decatur. (Signed copies of Cole's books “The Somewhat True Adventures of Sammy Shine,” "Nest for Celeste," and "Brambleheart" are still available at Little Shop.)

Cole's best advice to youngsters who want to work in children’s literature? Use a pad and pencil and get started! “No batteries required,” Cole told students.

Cole’s newest book, an illustrated chapter book, is “The Somewhat True Adventures of Sammy Shine.”

The Holy Innocents’ Primary School will also celebrate children’s literature by observing National Read Across America Day this Wednesday, May 2, a day created by the National Education Association to encourage reading.

Students at the Primary School will bring favorite teddy bears, pillows or blankets to school, wear pajamas, read to other students and teachers, and just have fun with books.

As Dr. Seuss said: “Fun is good!”
