Springmont Students Win Poetry, Art Awards

The 5 students won national and state awards in the River of Words Environmental Poetry and Art Project.

Each year, in affiliation with the Library of Congress Center for the Book, River of Words sponsors an international poetry and art contest on the theme of watersheds.

This year, five Springmont students won national and state awards in the River of Words Environmental Poetry and Art Project.

The Georgia Award Ceremony was held on Sunday, Aug. 23 at the DeKalb County Library.

The national winner is:

  • 2015 Art Finalist: Sloane Milam, grade 3, Butterfly Smile, daughter of Erin McCutcheon and Barry Milam

The state winners are:

  • Category II: Parker Hollosi, grade 6, Butterfly Sun, son of Roxane and Todd Hollosi
  • Category III: Emma Bulthuis, grade 8, Connected by the Sea and the Stars, daughter of Christine and John Bulthuis
  • Erin Lemmon, grade 8, Dragonflies, daughter of Lori and Tim Lemmon
  • Elizabeth Sims, grade 8, untitled, daughter of Linden and Amy Sims

All students are taught by Theresa Dean and Courtney Denis, Springmont’s art teachers.

“The Springmont community is a good steward of the environment,” said Head of School Jerri King. ”This is one of our Core Values, and we guide our students to develop an awareness of the natural world and each person’s responsibility for it. The River of Words project allows our students to learn about the world around them and develop a respect and love for it. I am so proud of our winners as well as everyone who participated in the project.”
