Georgia DOT is seeking a private sector partner to design and construct the project, as well as provide private financing for $600 to $650 million of the overall estimated $1.056 billion project cost.
The agency expects to issue a draft request for proposals this month and select its “best value” design/build contractor in December. Construction is expected to begin in 2016, with completion anticipated in 2019.
The I-285, S.R. 400 interchange, which handles over 400,000 vehicles a day, is located at the top end of the Perimeter, the largest office market in metro Atlanta and one of the region’s leading employment centers.
The goals of the project are to improve operations and safety by increasing interchange ramp capacity to accommodate more vehicles and to reduce vehicular weaving along the two routes. The project is slated to include new interchange flyover bridges and ramps as well as operational improvements on I-285 and S.R. 400, including collector-distributor lanes to separate through traffic from local traffic within the corridor.
On I-285, the project begins west of Roswell Road in Sandy Springs and extends approximately 4.3 miles to east of Ashford-Dunwoody Road in DeKalb County. On GA-400, the project begins just south of the Glenridge Connector and extends approximately 5.2 miles to just north of Spalding Drive in Sandy Springs.
