Police Charge Man With Armed Robbery After SWAT Standoff

Matthew Weber, 21, of Marietta was taken into custody Sunday morning after robbing Kroger at 8331 Roswell Road in Sandy Springs.

Sandy Springs police have charged a 21-year-old Marietta man with armed robbery following a standoff Sunday morning.

Matthew Weber was taken into custody after a standoff with the North Metro SWAT team, which occurred in a wooded area near Roswell Road at Northridge Road.

Sgt. Ron Momon, spokesperson with the Sandy Springs Police Department, said Weber allegedly took two carton of cigarettes from Kroger at 8331 Roswell Road and fled the scene.

Momon said the suspect was “caught a short distance later in a wooded area (while) placing a handgun to his head.”

SWAT negotiators were able to convince Weber to give up without incident. Detectives have also charged Weber with the Dec. 18 armed robbery of Walgreens at 7530 Roswell Road.

According to an incident report released by Sandy Springs police, a suspect walked into Walgreens around 2:50 a.m. wearing a black sweatshirt with the hood over his head, a black ski mask covering the bottom portion of his face, black gloves and dark colored jeans.

The suspect, according to the incident report, pointed ablack colored, semi-auto handgun at two victims and told them ”the reason he was robbing them was because he has bills to pay and kids to provide Christmas gifts for.”

The suspect took $274 from the cash register and two packs of Marlboro Blend No. 27 cigarettes.

Momon said Weber also has two active warrants issued by authorities in Forsyth County for burglary and possession of marijuana charges.
