U.S. Marshals Arrest Man for Bank and Sandy Springs Gas Station Robberies

Recent crimes in Sandy Springs include attempted robberies and fraud.

 

  • Last week, the U.S. Marshal’s Fugitive Task Force arrested Michael Winfield for a string of robberies in Cobb, Atlanta and Sandy Springs including hold-ups at the Shell Station on Roswell Road and Cliftwood Drive and a Chevron Station at 6385 Roswell Road. Winfield is also charged in a bank robbery in the City of Atlanta.
  • On Feb. 23, a man entered the Family Dollar Store at 8775 Roswell Road and pulled a gun on two employees. They gave him an undisclosed amount of money and he fled on foot. No one was injured. The suspect is described at a black male, mid-twenties, 5-foot-5, 150lbs, wearing  a gray coat with a camouflage pullover hoodie and jeans. He reportedly wore a camouflage scarf over his face and had a green duffle bag and silver weapon.
  • On Feb. 25, a man at the Lodge Apartments on Roswell Road said he was approached from behind as he left the mailbox area. The person put something against his neck and demanded everything he had. The victim gave the suspect two cell phones and some credit cards. The man then fled. The suspect is a Hispanic male, 20-25 years old 5-foot-10 slim and who wore a white shirt and jeans.

Fraud

  • On Feb. 26, Bank officials at Wells Fargo on Northside Drive called the police concerning someone trying to cash a fraudulent check. The man was gone when they arrived. Bank officials said a man on crutches came in with a check for just over $1,200. He provided ID and did a thumb print for the teller. During the transaction, the staff learned that the check was fraudulent. The man realized his scam was falling apart and asked for the check back and suddenly he bolted out of the bank.
  • On Feb. 27, a man was arrested outside the Staples store in the Prado shopping center for passing two counterfeit $100 bills inside the store. He is also suspected, based on video, of passing counterfeit money at the Target several weeks earlier. Evidence of crack cocaine, marijuana, and a pipe used for both, were on him at the time of arrest. The suspect had purchased a camera with the $200 in counterfeit money and received $67 back in change.
