Woman Jumps From Building To Escape Apartment Fire

The fire damaged at least six units Tuesday evening at the Avalon on Abernathy apartment complex in Sandy Springs.

Sandy Springs, GA -- A woman was transported to an area hospital after she leaped from an apartment building to avoid a fire late Tuesday evening.

Crews with Sandy Springs Fire Rescue responded to the call of a fire just after 11 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Avalon on Abernathy apartment complex, which is located in the 500 block of Abernathy Road.

The fire damaged at least six units and caused smoke damage to an additional six units in the complex, the city of Sandy Springs said. The resident was injured when she jumped from a third-floor unit to avoid the blaze.

She was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment. Sandy Springs Deputy Fire Chief Mark Duke said the victim remains at the hospital in serious condition. 

Fire investigators believe the case of the fire is related to a cooking incident.
