District leaders cited discrepancies between reported registrations and actual enrollment, while the academy's CEO says the cap forces them to turn away local families and hopes the board will revisit the limit later.
2. Dr. George Washington pinned as Savannah-Chatham schools' new police chief (wtoc.com) — Savannah-Chatham County schools now have a new police chief, Dr. George Washington, who was formally pinned at Woodville-Tompkins High School and brings more than 30 years of law enforcement and military experience. He says his priority is supporting Savannah students and families, encouraging parents to contact his department early so issues can be addressed before they escalate into the criminal system.
3. Oct. 9 - Savannah State University announces Doctor of Public Administration Program; Other awards (savannahbusinessjournal.com) — Savannah State University is expanding its impact with a major donation for a new field house and approval to launch a Doctor of Public Administration program, the first doctoral degree at a public HBCU in Georgia's university system. Beginning in Fall 2027 pending accreditation, the program and new funding aim to create more opportunities for Savannah students and strengthen community-focused leadership training.
4. 'It's something special'; Family behind Bonita Boutique shares their story (wsav.com) — Savannah residents can now experience a year-round celebration of Mexican culture at Bonita Boutique, a family-run boutique and café that grew from a parking-lot tent to a brick-and-mortar shop. Owner Dulce Alacron and her son Jesus offer handmade goods, traditional foods, and Loteria game nights every other Tuesday, aiming to share their heritage with the wider community.
5. Tesla & Pilot Open First Electric Semi Megacharger in Georgia (ccjdigital.com) — A new heavy-duty Tesla Megacharger site has opened at a Pilot travel center just outside Savannah, giving local freight traffic one of the first 1.2‑megawatt charging hubs in the country. The Ellabell location includes six high-power stalls for electric semis, with more sites planned nationwide as Pilot expands its alternative-fuels network.
