A juvenile black bear was recently seen near a busy road in Smyrna. Here's what you should do if you spot the young animal.

SMYRNA, GA — Residents in Smyrna are asked to take precautions after a black bear was recently sighted near Cottesford Drive and Windy Hill Road.

Smyrna Police on Sunday warned of the juvenile black bear sighting, asking residents to not approach or get near the bear.

People should be at a safe distance from the bear and not leave children outdoors unsupervised, police said.

"If you see the bear, give it plenty of space and allow it a clear path to leave the area," police said in a statement.

Small pets should be kept indoors, or at least monitored, police said. Residents are also advised to secure trash cans, bird feeds and pet food.

SPD urged people to share these tips with their neighbors.
