Brookwood Students Win Bill Gates Scholarships

Two students from Brookwood High were among seven in the district to win the Gates Millennium Scholars award.

Two Brookwood High School students are among a select seven across Gwinnett County Public Schools' winners of the Gates Millennium Scholars award, which comes with paid full college tuition for their college career. 

Pan Su “Peter” Kim and Joel Owen earned the coveted scholarships because of their  high academic performance, community involvement, extra-curricular activities, financial need The Brookwood students were among a group of  seven in the school district and 1,000 students across the United States who were chosen.

In addition to full tuition and undergraduate work, the students also qualify for select graduate and doctoral work.

The program is funded by a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and it is administered by the United Negro College Fund. The premise is to promote academic excellence for outstanding minority, low-income students.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program was established in 1999 by a $1.6 billion grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The foundation partners with American Indian Graduate Center Scholars, the Asian and Pacific Islander American Scholarship Fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the United Negro College Fund.

The Brookwood students, along with the five other students in the district who are recipients, will be honored at a special event at district offices on May 18. Representatives from the Gates Millennium Scholarship Program will be there to congratulate the students.
