Brookwood Tops District in Student AP Honors

Brookwood High School led the district in the number of students receiving awards in Advanced Placement courses and exams.

once again leads the district in the number of students recognized for their performances in Advanced Placement classes and exams.

The Snellville high school had 341 awards in total. North Gwinnett High and Paechtree Ridge High schools in Suwanee followed behind with 323 awards and 261 awards, respectively. 

According to the 2011 College Board AP Scholar report, 2,552 students in Gwinnett County Public Schools earned honors. That's up from 2,263 last year.

These students are among the top 18 percent of 1.9 million peers who took AP exams worldwide.

There are four different levels of achievement the College Board recognizes based on how well a student does on the Advanced Placement (AP) exams:

National AP Scholar: A student earns an average of 4 or higher on a scale of 5 on all AP exams taken or 4 or higher on eight or more exams.

AP Scholar with Distinction: To qualify, students earned an average of 3.5 on all exams and 3 or higher on five or more tests.

AP Scholar with Honor: Students who qualified for this honor earned an average of 3.25 on all exams and 3 or higher on four or more tests.

AP Scholar Award: Students earned this distinction by scoring 3 or higher on three or more tests.

Among Snellville high schools:

  • students earned 341 awards: 136 AP Scholars; 63 AP Scholars with Honor; 123 AP Scholars with Distinction; 19 National AP Scholars.
  • received 46 honors: 37 AP Scholars; 6 AP Scholars with Honors; 2 AP Scholars with Distinction; 1 National AP Scholar
  • received 33 honors: 23 AP Scholars; 6 AP Scholars with Honors; 4 AP Scholars with Distinction

A number of students received multiple awards because they must first earn the AP Scholar with Distinction before being named a National AP Scholar.

Advanced Placement (AP) classes allow students to earn college credit while still in high school.
