Commerce Club to Present Scholarships
In May, the Snellville Commerce Club will present scholarship awards to Robert Hembree, a Brookwood High student, and Asante Farquharson, a South Gwinnett High student.

senior Robert “Cole” Hembree and School senior Asante Farquharson are the recipients of $1,000 college scholarships awarded by the Snellville Commerce Club.
Each year, the club presents a scholarship to a graduate from each school who participates in their school’s Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) or Distributive Education Club of America (DECA) program.

The awards will be presented at the club’s noon lunch meeting on May 1 in the community room of The public is invited to attend.
Hembree is the president of the DECA chapter at . In DECA, he received a first-place award at the region competition and a fourth place award at the state competition, and was recognized as DECA Student of the Year in 2012. He plans to enter Georgia Gwinnett College, and hopes to major in biology with a minor in marketing/marketing management.

Farquharson is on the honor roll at , with a 3.88 grade point average. She hopes to pursue a career in the health care field. She earned a degree as a certified nursing assistant, and has completed an internship with . She regularly participates in community service activities, and recently received a key to the city from Snellville.
Club co-president Jon Richards said, “Again this year, the scholarship selection committee was very impressed by the quality of the applications we received, and choosing the best of the best was difficult.
"The FBLA and DECA programs at and provide a great opportunity for students to learn about entrepreneurship and prepare for rewarding careers. It is an honor to recognize these fine students."
Established in 1984, the Snellville Commerce Club promotes programs that strengthen ties between members, their businesses and the community. The club holds a lunch meeting on the first Tuesday of each month with a guest speaker, along with several "Business After Hours" networking events each year. The Commerce Club is the membership organization of the Snellville Tourism & Trade Association.
