Former Falcon Provides Home For Gwinnett Single Mom

Warrick Dunn has been helping single mothers for 20 years in memory of his mother, a slain police officer.

SNELLVILLE, GA — A single mom from Gwinnett County got a whole new start thanks to former Atlanta Falcon Warrick Dunn, Habitat For Humanity and others.

Lula Jobir, with her son Mussab by her side, knew she'd be becoming a homeowner for the first time on Wednesday via her work with Habitat For Humanity.

What she didn't know was that Dunn and other sponsors would be there with a $5,000 check to show her a fully furnished home stocked with groceries and other goods to help with their new start.

Dunn's personal charity assists single parents in becoming first-time homeowners by providing the materials necessary for long-term stability and the provisions required to ensure that both parent and children can thrive educationally, socially and economically.

Over the past 20 years, in partnership with Aaron's and Habitat for Humanity, Warrick Dunn Charities and its sponsors have rewarded 154 single parents and over 400 children and dependents in 15 cities.

"I began this charity as a tribute to my mother’s dream of home ownership and Lula embodies that dream with her dedication and unwavering enthusiasm every time she talks about living in her family’s new beautiful home," Dunn said.

Born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Dunn was raised by his mother, Betty Smothers. Smothers was a police officer and single mother. On January 7, 1993, she was shot and killed by armed robbers while working off-duty security at a bank.

Jobir's newly remodeled home was originally built in 1992 as Habitat's fifth home in Gwinnett County. Its first owner moved on, but sold it back to Habitat For Humanity.

Before moving in, Jobir, a certified animal-care technician at Emory Univeristy, and her son shared a bedroom in her sister's apartment in Norcross.
