Lightning Causes Damaging Snellville House Fire

Lightning during Thursday's thunderstorm hit a home on Trotters Pointe Drive.

A lightning strike during Thursday evening thunderstorms caused extensive damage to a south Gwinnett County home.

None of the three occupants were injured in the blaze.

Firefighters responded at 7:48 p.m. to a reported fire in the 2900 block of Trotters Pointe Drive near Snellville. The fire had already been well-established in the second floor and the attic directly above.

“The fire was reportedly caused by a lightning strike during a strong thunderstorm that moved through the area packing intense lightning and heavy rain,” Gwinnett Fire Capt. Tommy Rutledge said in a news release Friday morning. “Occupants reported hearing a loud boom and felt the house vibrate. They began smelling and seeing smoke inside the house moments later.”

The fire caused heavy damage to the second floor and attic.

A family of two adults and one child were displaced by the fire. They didn’t not require Red Cross assistant.
