Barricaded Gunman Kills Self: Gwinnett County Police

SNELLVILLE, GA — After several hours of communications with the suspect, officers found that he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police say. The suspect’s name is James Burley Jr, 33. Notification has been made to his next-of-kin.

"We’d like to thank the neighbors and motorists for their patience," said Cpl. Michele Pihera, Gwinnett Police spokesperson.

1st Update:

Gwinnett Police are on the scene of a barricaded gunman on Laurel View Drive in unincorporated Snellville. Officers received information that a man with active warrants for his arrest was at a house on that street. While responding to the scene, information was provided that the man had armed himself with a gun.

Due to this information, on duty SWAT officers responded to the scene to assist. Police have shut down Hewett Road due to its close proximity to the scene. The residents in the surrounding homes have been told to shelter in place. Negotiations are ongoing for a peaceful surrender.

Gwinnett Fire Department is staging at the command post as a precaution.

Laurel View Drive in Snellville has been blocked off and Gwinnett County Police officers are negotiating with a barricaded gunman.

The Gwinnett County Police Department is actively involved in a SWAT activation in unincorporated Snellville.

The man barricaded appears to be the only one inside the home. At this time, his name and list of charges are not being released.
