School's Out For Summer

Like students all over Gwinnett County, Snellville's Shiloh Elementary ushered in the Memorial Day weekend and the unofficial start of the summer by leaving school behind. These students also bid farewell to their retiring principal, Betty Ann Schoeneck.

Students at Shiloh Elementary in Snellville celebrated the last day of school with an outdoor picnic.

School administration, teachers, students and their families gathered on the grassy lawn at the school to share a picnic lunch, dance to a live disc jockey's tunes and participate in a Shiloh Elementary tradition, the limbo.

"When they go under the limbo stick, they're officially in the next grade up," said Principal Betty Ann Schoeneck.

The fifth-grade students, who will move up to Shiloh Middle School in August, weren't the only ones saying goodbye at the picnic. Principal Schoeneck is retiring after serving as a principal in Gwinnett County since 1988. For her, the end-of-year celebration at the school was bittersweet. Amid the cheering and laughter of the day, students and teachers took time out to bid their principal farewell and wish her the best.

The county's official last day for students was Friday, some district staff members are finishing up their last day today.
