Snellville Officials Get Look at Signage, Towne Green Plans

Downtown Development Authority revealed plans by designers Sky Design for a variety of signage to be placed at entranceways to the city.

The Snellville Mayor and Council got a look at a plan to place signature signage throughout the city and another for major improvements to the Towne Green Monday.

After months of discussion, revisions and planning, the Downtown Development Authority revealed plans by Atlanta-based designers Sky Design for a variety of signage to be placed at entranceways to the city, to differentiate districts and to be used for promotion.

The designers said they worked to show the city is traditional, progressive, established, friendly and safe among other traits when designing the signage. They also wanted to incorporate the Towne Center Masterplan, the dark red brick and natural tones found at City Hall. Also incorporated in the design, City Hall’s dome and the new Veterans Memorial.

“The design unifies the variety of aspects and districts found in the city,” said Economic Development Manager Eric Van Otteren. “It also lets people know they have arrived somewhere and that they are leaving somewhere. It helps give the city an image. The committee wanted to advance the city but keep it rooted in tradition.”

At the Sept. 18 DDA meeting, discussions about construction and a timeline will begin. Key locations for the new signs have already been pinpointed, the first being near the intersection of Highway 124 and Ronald Reagan Parkway; another is at Oak Road and Highway 78.

The signs will take on a variety of shapes, uses and materials. Lights will be affixed to the top of some, a dome will be incorporated into others and drape-like materials will be on others.

The Towne Green plan, by Root Design of Tucker, calls for a more than 2-foot-tall brick wall around its perimeter, defined entrance ways for pedestrians and vehicles, a raised table crosswalk for those crossing Oak Road, signage at the corner of Oak Road and Highway 78 and new foliage. The design creates a sealed-off area which promotes safety and leisure on the Green while also providing functionality.

Van Otteren said the project should begin in the winter and be completed by the time the Snellville Farmers’ Market opens next May.
