Snellville Police Department Recognized for Prevention Efforts
The City of Snellville's Police Department was recognized for the diligent work of its officers in helping to reduce retail underage access

In the last year, the Snellville Police Department conducted two compliance checks, utilizing underage decoys to ensure that area retailers comply with state and city laws that prohibit people under 21 from purchasing alcohol. Over the last year, officers visited 30 retailers in the City of Snellville. Out of those 30 alcohol retailers, four sold to an underage decoy, making the compliance rate 87% for the year—compared to 88% last year.
Compliance checks like these have been an effective tool in preventing underage sales of alcohol by local retailers. The Snellville Police Department has been able to continue to conduct regular compliance checks due in part to a strong relationship with Gwinnett United in Drug Education, Inc. (GUIDE) who funds the checks through the Alcohol Prevention Project contract with the Georgia Department of Behavior Health and Developmental Disabilities.
On September 14th, in recognition of their diligence to reduce retail and social access of alcohol to teens and underage young adults in the last year, GUIDE hosted a breakfast and presented the Police Department with the Community Recognition award. Chief Whitehead accepted the award, saying “We appreciate the relationship with GUIDE as we work together to reduce the use and abuse of alcohol by underage people. The men and women of our department are proud of the work they do to make our community safe and appreciate the award and recognition of their efforts by GUIDE.”
