Gwinnett County, GA – Timothy Swiney, Democratic Candidate for Georgia State Senate called for implementation of a Fair Tax Plan for Georgia State that would include abolishing the earned income tax, as well as, tax on owner-occupied residential property.
First and foremost, we must accept that taxes are the price we pay for government services such as law enforcement, emergency services, the court system, public education, roads, stop lights, and many other public services. With that understanding must also come assurances that; 1) the tax burden is shared proportionally and fairly among all residents and legal entities receiving the benefits of these services; and, 2) tax dollars are spent wisely and for the general public welfare. Unfortunately this has not always been the case here in Georgia.
Small businesses and working families carry a disproportional amount of the tax burden while others enjoy tax loopholes allowing them to limit, and often avoid, paying a fair share of the tax burden.
Every election year Georgia Republicans pull out the same old song and dance, promising to “fix the system” that they have created and continue to perpetuate. The truth is, Republicans have had absolute power in Georgia for nearly a decade and if they seriously wanted tax reform they have had every opportunity to deliver. As your State Senator I will work for true tax reform in Georgia. Tax Reform is not a Republican vs. Democrat issue. It is not a conservative vs. liberal issue. It is a economic issue that affects all of us.
By eliminating the Income Tax, the tax liability will be based on the individual’s consumption rather than on productivity.

I support the elimination of the state income tax and the implementation of a sales tax revenue base. Nine states, including our neighbors Tennessee and Florida have eliminated the income tax and are performing well in comparison to Georgia. Under a sales tax, all residents, whether documented or undocumented, will carry a fair share of the tax burden. Tax is based on what an individual consumes, rather than what they produce. Under the sales tax system hard work, responsibility, and success would not be subject to targeted tax penalties.
Abolishing the Residential Property Tax.
The residential property tax is one of the most anti-American taxes ever levied. Under the current property tax system, homeowners are unfairly targeted and carry an excessive tax burden. As State Senator I will work for a constitutional amendment abolishing the tax on owner occupied residential property. The property tax is nothing more than a penalty levied against responsible hardworking residents who have achieved the American dream of home ownership. By eliminating the property tax we will insure that all residents, including renters, those living in their parents’ basements, and those here illegally, carry a fair share of the tax burden.
Implementation of comprehensive tax reform in no way means an end to vital social programs designed to help those in need. The Fair Tax system will serve to equalize the tax burden for all residents, insuring that all residents, whether documented or undocumented, homeowner or renter, will carry a fair share of the tax burden.
