Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation and Taylor English Duma Announce Second Annual AVLF At The Movies Awareness-Raiser

Special Screening of Paycheck to Paycheck: The Life and Times of Katrina Gilbert

The Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation (AVLF) and Taylor English Duma LLP have partnered again to host a special showing of the documentary film Paycheck to Paycheck: The Life and Times of Katrina Gilbert on Monday, September 21, 2015 at the Landmark Midtown Art Cinema in Atlanta.

AVLF’s second annual “AVLF at the Movies” is meant to spark a dialogue about the challenges faced by the 42 million women and 28 million children who depend on them, living in or on the brink of poverty. The movie explores the deeply personal, unvarnished and moving story of Katrina Gilbert, a working single mom of three caught in a system that almost seems designed to see her fail.

“As the income disparity gap in America becomes more noticeable, it is important for us to take a step back and understand why this is happening and how it is impacting American families,” said Michael Lucas, deputy director of the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation. “In our second year of hosting ‘AVLF at the Movies,’ we chose Paycheck to Paycheck: The Life and Times of Katina Gilbert for its powerful showing of hard facts and the personal struggle for economic empowerment. We hope this special screening will not only promote a deeper understanding of the lives of the families we serve and the challenges they face, but also compel viewers to discuss the fracturing of America’s economic support system and ways we can work toward more stable homes and families in Atlanta – no matter the personal circumstance.”

Following the screening, Katrina Gilbert will join other panelists for an audience Q&A to discuss the issues raised in the documentary, poverty in Atlanta, and the barriers it creates for too many of our neighbors.
