Brian Westlake announces campaign for House District 82

Decatur—This morning, Brian Westlake is announcing his candidacy for State Representative in House District 82. He is a former marine and an award winning public school teacher with nearly two decades of teaching experience. A Democratic candidate for State School Superintendent in 2010, Westlake received over 60,000 votes statewide.

On his website, Westlake states that the incumbent, Representative Mary Margaret Oliver, voted in favor of Governor Deal’s Opportunity School District legislation while most Democratic lawmakers opposed it. He suggests that Representative Oliver, whose career in the state legislature began in 1987, has a long history of supporting constitutional changes that result in concentrating power in the office of the Governor. At a recent education panel discussion, Westlake told an audience member “I do not believe that most Georgians want a top-down style of government that concentrates so much power in the hands of the well connected few, and Georgia deserves a legislature that is filled with representative citizens rather than career politicians.”

Westlake holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and a Master of Science degree in sociology from Florida State University. He also received a Juris Doctor degree from Georgia State University’s College of Law and a Master of Public Administration from the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. He currently lives with his fiancée in Decatur, Georgia.
