Taipei Chinese Orchestra with Wu Man, pipa, Flora Glenn Candler Concert Series

The famous Taipei landmark Zhongshan Hall is home to this remarkable ensemble, which performs throughout the world for more than 100,000 people each year. The first person to ever earn a master’s degree in pipa, Wu Man, joins the orchestra to perform on the plucked instrument with origins in China’s Qin and Han Dynasties (221 B.C.). The program (subject to change) includes Leung-Fai Lo’s “Dancing of Harvest Festival,” Yi-Chien Chou’s “Folk Style of Taiwanese Opera,” Yiu-Kwong Chung’s “Pipa Concerto ‘The Yang’s Saga,’” Tan Dun’s “Crouching Tiger Concerto” and traditional Taiwanese folks songs. There will be a pre-concert lecture at 3 p.m. An exciting introduction to fascinating world of Chinese music with demonstrations of traditional Chinese instruments and instrumentation.
