The Response

Emory University School of Law's International Humanitarian Law Clinic and International Law Society will host a screening of the Academy-Award nominated film "The Response" followed by a panel discussion with former military prosecutors and international humanitarian law experts.

"The Response" is a dramatization based on transcripts of Guantanamo Bay military tribunals.  The 30-minute film centers on the trial of a Middle Eastern detainee and three military judges weighing his case.  They must decide whether he is guilty of providing support to Al Qaeda and responsible for the deaths of several American soldiers. The detainee maintains he is an innocent victim of circumstance.

A discussion on international humanitarian law and national security issues will follow the film. Panelists are:

• Adm. Donald Guter, president and dean of South Texas College of Law, and retired U.S. Navy Rear Admiral, Judge Advocate General's Corps

• John Chandler, habeas counsel for detainees and partner at King & Spalding LLP, Atlanta

• Geoffrey Corn, professor at South Texas College of Law, and retired U.S. Army Colonel, Judge Advocate General's Corps
