As a part of the Emory Cinematheque International Film Series, this film by Shôhei Imamura is based on the true story of Akira Nishiguchi who was ultimately executed for a 1963-64 killing spree after he was captured with the help of an 11-year-old girl. The film received the Best Picture Award by the Japanese Film Academy and is now widely considered both Imamura’s masterpiece as well as one of the best Japanese films of the seventies.
