Is the Fernbank Science Center Sustainable?

Do you think the science center could survive without money from DeKalb County?

DeKalb School Watch recently dug up a 2006 proposal that researched the sustainability of as a nonprofit.

The proposal never moved forward, and the science center is still funded and operated by DeKalb County Schools.

But despite the millions of dollars of support from the school district, friends of Fernbank are concerned about the future of the science and mathematics magnet and educational tools offered at the Druid Hills center located at the edge of Fernbank Forest.

, and the science center could lose many programs and opportunities for kids.

Critics say the seven to eight million dollars a year it costs to keep the center running should be spent on science education in classrooms across the district instead of one, isolated location.
