📰 News we're reading

1. Look Out! There's A Hole In This Waikīkī Sidewalk (civilbeat.org) — If you walk along Kūhiō Avenue near the Honolulu Zoo in Waikīkī, watch for a cone-ringed hole where a collapsed storm drain has left rebar and a deep gap in the sidewalk. After months without repairs despite a resident's 311 report, the city has finally marked the hazard, and officials say scheduling a permanent fix will depend on available resources.

2. Honolulu opens DMV kiosk in Kailua (kioskmarketplace.com) — Honolulu has opened a new DMV self-service kiosk at Foodland in Kailua Town Center, letting you renew eligible vehicle registrations during store hours, including evenings and weekends. This is the 11th kiosk on Oahu, part of the city's push to move routine DMV tasks away from counters and shorten in-person lines for residents islandwide.

3. USCGC Joseph Gerczak returns home following Blue Pacific patrol (seapowermagazine.org) — A Honolulu‑homeported Coast Guard cutter and its crew are back in port after a 52‑day Blue Pacific patrol that stretched more than 7,500 nautical miles. Based out of Coast Guard Base Honolulu, they worked with Pacific partners to strengthen maritime security, combat illegal fishing, and support local communities across Oceania before returning home this week.

4. City and state join forces to help prevent Honolulu's flood problem (hawaiipublicradio.org) — Honolulu crews are clearing debris from Mānoa, Pālolo, and Makiki streams using a $9 million emergency fund to reduce flood risk before future storms. State and city agencies are teaming up beyond their usual jurisdictions to tackle upstream problem areas feeding the Ala Wai, aiming to prevent a repeat of past devastating floods.

5. Honolulu firefighters extinguish lanai fire at Waikiki building (staradvertiser.com) — Honolulu firefighters quickly contained and extinguished a lanai fire this morning in a Waikiki high-rise near Ala Moana Boulevard, safely evacuating five residents. No one appeared to need hospital transport, though EMS evaluated occupants, and nearby roads were briefly closed while crews secured the building and investigated the cause.
