Today's riddle: What has a cap but no head? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Another change of plans for Honolulu's Chinatown (hawaiipublicradio.org) — Honolulu's plans to revitalize Chinatown just shifted again after the City Council canceled funding that would have moved two city agencies into the King Liberty Center on North King Street. Architect Dean Sakamoto and his nonprofit SHADE now face an uncertain future in the district, while Mayor Rick Blangiardi is pinning hopes on a new mixed-use redevelopment of the soon-to-be-demolished Chinatown Cultural Plaza on Beretania Street.
2. Happy Days food cleanup could take several more days (khon2.com) — Cleanup of rotting food at the former Happy Days Restaurant in Kaimuki is dragging on, leaving nearby Honolulu businesses and pedestrians dealing with intense odors and unsanitary sidewalks. Crews say it may take about another week to clear remaining food, while health and permitting officials coordinate next steps that could include demolishing the damaged building.
3. HPD warns of scams impersonating law enforcement, government agencies (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Honolulu Police are warning residents about scammers impersonating HPD officers and federal agents, even using a former CrimeStoppers sergeant's name and photo in a fake cryptocurrency recovery scheme. Victims are told they can clear charges by paying for bogus classes via apps like Apple Pay, Zelle, and Cash App; HPD urges anyone targeted to stop contact, alert their bank, and file reports with police and the FBI's IC3.
4. 0001539745-01 - Hawaii's State Legals & Public Notices (staradvertiser.com) — Honolulu residents can weigh in on a proposed accessory dwelling unit, garage, wastewater system, and home renovations on a shoreline lot in Waialua at a Department of Planning and Permitting hearing on October 23. The meeting will be held at the Fasi Municipal Building on South King Street in Honolulu, with options to attend in person, join via WebEx, or submit written testimony in advance.
5. Hawaii bets on sports tourism to boost visitor spending (khon2.com) — Major sports events in Honolulu, like the Honolulu Marathon and Honolulu Century Ride, are central to Hawaii's push to grow higher-spending sports tourism. State and tourism officials say participant-focused events, from golf tournaments to cycling and potential NFL-linked flag football, are designed to attract visitors who stay longer, spend more, and experience Oahu beyond traditional sightseeing.
