1. 2nd District candidates agree: military should provide more housing in Hawaii (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Housing affordability in Honolulu and across Hawaii takes center stage as 2nd District candidates Jill Tokuda and Brenton Awa both press the military to build more on-base and even civilian housing. They also back tax changes and limits on corporate and foreign ownership to ease costs, while differing on ties to a future Trump administration and other policy details.
   

2. UH holds first hearing on proposed new tuition schedule (khon2.com) — Honolulu students and families could see University of Hawaii tuition increases starting in 2029, following a two-year freeze, with UH Mānoa facing two 5% hikes and other campuses 3% hikes. At the first public hearing in Honolulu, campus leaders argued rising costs demand higher tuition, while students raised concerns about food and housing insecurity. More public meetings and an online comment form are open through late October.
   

3. Friends remember Hawaii family killed in New Mexico crash: 'They were really family' (khon2.com) — Friends in Honolulu and across Oahu are mourning Wayne, Luana and Lilinoe Viveiro, a beloved Hawaii family killed in a crash while vacationing in New Mexico. 4. DLE plans new license plate recognition cameras amid privacy concerns (hawaiinewsnow.com) — State law enforcement officials in Honolulu are preparing to deploy hundreds of automated license plate recognition cameras across several islands, raising privacy questions for Hawaii residents. Leaders say the system will target agricultural crime, not immigration enforcement, while groups like pig hunters and farmers see potential benefits in documenting trespassing and theft on remote properties.
