Today's riddle: Why do some birds fly south for the winter? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Ranked Choice Voting Could Shake Up Honolulu Elections (civilbeat.org) — Honolulu voters will decide whether to adopt ranked choice voting for mayor, City Council, and prosecuting attorney in a Nov. 3 charter question that could overhaul how local leaders are elected. The change would consolidate most races into a single November election, but it only takes effect if the Legislature agrees and would not start until 2032, giving time for legal clarity and voter education.
2. Two people hospitalized in early morning Nimitz Highway rollover crash (kitv.com) — An early-morning rollover crash on Nimitz Highway near Sand Island sent two young adults to Honolulu hospitals in serious condition, according to city EMS. The single-vehicle collision into a ravine happened around 3:15 a.m., and a third passenger declined transport as investigators continue piecing together what led to the wreck.
3. Utility pole blocks Kamehameha Highway near Pounders Beach (khon2.com) — A serious crash has closed Kamehameha Highway in both directions near Pounders Beach in Laie after a vehicle knocked down a utility pole, according to Honolulu police alerts. Drivers from Honolulu heading through the North Shore area should expect long delays, detours, and an extended closure while crews investigate, clear the pole from the roadway, and repair damaged utility lines.
4. Hawaii State archives highlight more than 200 years of Waikiki history (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Honolulu residents can explore more than 200 years of Waikīkī history this month through free Hawaii State Archives exhibits online and in person at ʻIolani Palace. Curated into weekly themes for Archives Month, the collection features rare photos, sheet music, and documents highlighting Waikīkī's evolution from the Kingdom era to today's hotel and conservation landscape.
5. Rainbow Wahine wrap up Mountain West home opening weekend, downing UTEP, 2-1 (hawaiinewsnow.com) — Playing at home in Honolulu, the Rainbow Wahine soccer team edged UTEP 2-1 to complete a strong Mountain West opening weekend and extend their winning streak to three. With goals from Tatum Porter and Anuhea Aluli, UH moved to 3-1 in conference play and now heads to California for road matches against San Jose State and UC Davis.
