Today's riddle: What do you call a belt that is made of watches? 🤔 (Answer below!)
• Maui wildfires linked to toxic metals exposure and abnormal lung function (innovationnewsnetwork.com) — Kahului residents are among those showing some of the highest metal levels and abnormal lung-function rates in a major new study on health impacts from the 2023 Maui wildfires. Researchers found elevated metals like antimony, manganese, and arsenic months after the fires, and say long-term monitoring is needed to untangle wildfire-related exposure from older environmental contamination across Maui neighborhoods.
• Drone inspections support wildfire safety efforts across Maui County (mauinow.com) — Kahului residents will see Hawaiian Electric and ProEnergy crews flying drones over local power lines throughout October as part of a wildfire safety push. The inspections, done weekdays, won't affect electric service but may require brief access to some yards. Crews will be clearly identified, and residents can call listed numbers with questions about the work or drone activity.
• Request for proposals issued for a Special Medical Needs Power Supply Program (mauinow.com) — Kahului's council representative is backing a new county program to provide backup power for residents who depend on electric medical equipment during outages. The Department of Human Concerns is seeking organizations to run the pilot, with a virtual information meeting Oct. 7 and proposals due Oct. 30. This could directly help medically fragile residents in Kahului and across Maui County.
