Environmental groups and Boise's mayor are already raising concerns about impacts on open space and calling for a statewide framework, and residents will have chances to weigh in during upcoming BLM reviews.
2. Boise Schools look ahead at potential closures amid decreasing enrollment (idahopress.com) — Boise School District leaders are warning that declining enrollment and aging buildings will likely force school closures or consolidations within the next two to five years. With enrollment projected to drop by another 3,000 students and maintenance needs nearing $480 million, officials are studying which schools and attendance areas to merge and are asking residents to weigh in through an online survey.
3. Vinny's Coffee Corner opens inside Boise thrift store, supporting St. Vincent de Paul's mission (kivitv.com) — A newly remodeled St. Vincent de Paul thrift store on State Street now includes Vinny's Coffee Corner, giving Boise shoppers a spot to grab a drink while supporting local nonprofit programs. With donated equipment, local art, and even 99-cent take-home mugs, the café aims to build community and funnel all proceeds back into St. Vincent de Paul's broader mission.
4. New downtown Boise YMCA set to open Dec. 12. Here's a look at the construction progress (ktvb.com) — Boise residents will soon have access to a new $80 million CapEd Downtown Boise YMCA opening Dec. 12, with expanded fitness areas, geothermal-heated pools, and a Kid Zone. The four-story building will replace the aging 1969 facility, add on-site St. Luke's medical space, and eventually be joined by an early education center that doubles the Y's childcare capacity.
5. Space Robots: The Search for Life on Mars (boisestatepublicradio.org) — A Mars mission scientist is coming to JUMP in downtown Boise today, Sept. 26, to talk about the Perseverance rover's search for signs of past life. Residents can hear firsthand how rock samples are collected and why they matter, and learn about other robotic missions through Spacepoint's connections and resources.
