Boise City Council Confirms Chief Niemeyer As Fire Chief

Chief Niemeyer will be available on Thursday at 11:00 am to field media questions during the Mayor's Press Huddle.

Boise City Council voted unanimously Tuesday evening to confirm Chief Mark Niemeyer as Boise Fire Chief. Chief Niemeyer will start on November 30th.

Chief Niemeyer joins Boise from the City of Meridian. Until accepting the position Niemeyer served as the Meridian Fire Chief and Emergency Operations Manager, where he helped craft their COVID-19 plan.

Chief Niemeyer thanked the Mayor, Boise City Council, the Boise Fire Department, and Fire Union members for the opportunity. "I look forward to bringing my professional experience to the organization," said Chief Niemeyer. "I believe strongly in collaboration and will be looking forward to many great opportunities to collaborate with other City departments, as well as our public safety partners.”

"I made a promise to build regional relationships. In this current emergency, due to the COVID pandemic Chief Mark Niemeyer will be the perfect partner in this undertaking,” said Mayor Lauren Mclean. "I think Chief Niemeyer is the right person for the job and the perfect person for right now.”

After his confirmation Chief Niemeyer expanded on the challenges ahead for Boise Fire. “The on-going threat of COVID-19 cannot be understated. Our firefighters are on the front lines responding to those who have been affected by this virus. As an organization, we will continue to respond to those in need regardless of the danger presented. But we will also continue to ensure the physical and mental health of our firefighters. Again, thank you, Madam Mayor and Council, for this honor- I look forward to getting to work."

Prominent community members have voiced their excitement for the new Chief. Director of the Idaho Office of Emergency Management Brad Richy said, "he was without a doubt the best candidate to fill this key leadership position based on his demonstrated performance, amazing leadership, and untiring and selfless service to our communities. Chief Niemeyer has proven himself to be a motivated self-starter, a natural leader, who consistently demonstrates total dedication to his job. I look forward to working with Chief Niemeyer in his new role."
