Idaho Primary Election Results: 7 Statewide Races

Seven statewide positions are up for election this year. Polls open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

BOISE, ID — It's primary day in Idaho and voters will head to the polls to cast their ballots on seven statewide races, including a much anticipated governor's race. Polls will open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Gem State. All absentee ballots have to be returned to county clerks' offices by 8 p.m.,

Two congressional seats are up for election along with 16 state Senate seats and 32 state House seats.

But all eyes are on the gubernatorial race. Specifically, the GOP side, where Tuesday's winner will likely go on to defeat the Democratic candidate in the November general election.

Here's a breakdown of the statewide races:

Governor

Democrats: The Democratic primary is open, meaning any registered voter can cast a ballot. Three people are running for the position: A.J. Balukoff, Peter Dill and Paulette Jordan.

  • Balukoff is a 72-year-old businessman and community leader, according to a voter guide provided by the Idaho Statesman and the League of Women Voters. He also ran for governor in 2014.
  • Dill is an organic farmer and lawyer.
  • Jordan, 38, is a two-term Idaho state legislator and a member of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, Vox reported. She is the youthful progressive in the race who has earned national endorsements from Planned Parenthood and the People for Bernie Sanders.

Republicans: The crowded GOP primary features seven possible candidates: Tommy Ahlquist, Harley Delano Brown, Dalton Ben Cannady, U.S. Rep. Raul Labrador, Brad Little, Lisa Marie and Steve Pankey.

  • Ahlquist, a former doctor and affluent commercial real estate developer, is considered the outsider in the race who has hinted at a culture war message and has business-oriented politics, Vox reported.
  • Brown is a civil engineer and retired Naval officer.
  • Cannady is a public works employee.
  • Labrador is a right-wing conservative and four-term House lawmaker. He helped found the firebrand Freedom Caucus.
  • Little is the current lieutenant governor who has been in the position for nine years. He's also a rancher and small businessman.
  • Marie is an entrepreneur.
  • Pankey is a retired property manager.
