1. City Invites Eligible Organizations to CDBG Technical Assistance Meeting (pocatellochubbuckobserver.com) — Pocatello nonprofits and local agencies now have a key deadline if they hope to tap 2027 Community Development Block Grant funding, as the city is holding a mandatory technical assistance workshop Sept. 16 at City Hall. Staff will explain eligibility, project fit, and application steps for programs that support low- and moderate-income residents, including housing, shelters, and infrastructure projects.
2. Inside look at mosquito testing in Bannock County after West Nile Virus detected (localnews8.com) — Health officials in Bannock County, based out of Pocatello, have confirmed West Nile Virus in a mosquito pool near Swan Lake but say no human cases have been detected. The Mosquito Abatement Office has stepped up larvicide and nighttime fogging, and they're urging residents to use bug spray and protective clothing while they continue intensive testing through September.
3. Fish and Game Removes Young Black Bear from a South Pocatello Neighborhood (pocatellochubbuckobserver.com) — A young black bear wandering through a south Pocatello neighborhood was safely captured by Idaho Fish and Game and relocated to remote habitat, after being spotted foraging on backyard berries. Biologists say drought and scarce natural food likely pushed the bear into town, noting such sightings inside city limits remain rare.
4. Two milestones, one celebration: Pocatello Recovery Fest turns 25 alongside 9/11 memorial (idahostatejournal.com) — Pocatello residents are invited to the free, family-friendly Gate City Recovery Fest at Lookout Point, celebrating 25 years of local recovery support while honoring the 25th anniversary of 9/11. Expect live music from Lil Red, free food, raffle prizes, and resource booths, plus a keynote from a Marine Corps veteran sharing his recovery and service story.
5. Nine Idaho First Responders Receive Medal of Honor (dailyfly.com) — Two Pocatello police officers have been honored with Idaho's Medal of Honor for life-saving actions in 2025, including a house-fire rescue and safely helping a man off the Benton Street overpass. They were recognized alongside seven other Idaho first responders in a Capitol ceremony celebrating extraordinary courage in the line of duty.
