2 Illinois Teens Die In Sledding Accident At Ski Resort

SUMMIT COUNTY, CO — Two Illinois teens died Sunday in a sledding accident at a ski resort in Colorado, according to authorities.

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. at Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Summit County, police said. The victims, 17 and 18, rode tandem down a half pipe and launched off a large snowbank at the bottom, landing hard on the ice below and suffering blunt force trauma, according to police.

The two males, who were on a spring break vacation, received immediate medical attention but couldn’t be revived and were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Both victims were students at Prairie Central High School in the rural central Illinois town of Fairbury, according to the local school district.

"We are committed to doing everything we can to help our students and staff with the grieving and healing process," Superintendent Paula Crane said in a message to families, adding that the local Baptist church would offer counseling, prayer and community for students Monday.

Summit County authorities warned the public to take safety measures when participating in snow activities and to remain aware of the associated risks.
