20 Safest Cities In IL In 2024: Report
Is your city among the safest in Illinois? See the state rankings, as well as which cities are among the safest in the United States.
ILLINOIS — There are many safe places to call home in Illinois, according to crime statistics analyzed by SafeWise.
SafeWise, a security product review platform, looked at FBI crime statistics for cities in Illinois to compile its 10th annual Safest Cities report. A total of 166 cities in the state met the criteria to be considered for ranking, with Campton Hills topping the list as only one crime was reported, a burglary, in the Kane County village, according to SafeWise.
The rankings are based on FBI crime data. Cities and jurisdictions across the country voluntarily report the information through the FBI Summary Reporting System and National Incident-Based Reporting System. The most recent FBI data was released in October 2023 and accounts for crimes reported in 2022. SafeWise also used population thresholds in its reporting, according to the company.

While violent crimes have decreased by 14 percent in Illinois, the state is the fifth-most worried, with SafeWise reporting 62 percent of residents are "highly concerned" when it comes to violent crimes. The violent crime rate in the state has decreased from 4.3 incidents per 1,000 people in 2022 to 3.9 this year.

In addition to the safest cities by state lists that SafeWise released last month, the company also reported its list of the 100 Safest Cities In America last week. Though both reports use the same data and criteria, according to SafeWise, Patch found the results are quite different.
On this list, 26 different states have cities in the top 100, with Illinois boasting the most safe cities at 10. Patch has reached out to SafeWise for clarification on any discrepancies in the reports.
