ILLINOIS — A seasonable winter with plenty of snow and cold is ahead in Illinois and most of North America, according to a new 2024 winter forecast from The Old Farmer’s Almanac.

The Midwest and Northeast will see snow start to fall well ahead of the start of meteorological winter on Dec. 1 and the winter solstice on Dec. 21 — and storms, showers and flurries will continue through the start of spring, the forecast said.

Snow totals will be at or slightly above normal in Illinois, the forecast states.

Temperatures are expected to be mild to cool in the Deep South, Texas and California, which could also receive drought-quenching rain.

The Pacific Northwest is expected to be relatively dry and cold throughout winter, with some snow possible in late December and mid-January. Forecasters said there’s even a chance for a white Christmas, a rare occurrence for the region that typically receives rain from storm clouds.

The Old Farmer’s Almanac said its winter forecasts have been 80 percent accurate since 1972.
