Man Wielding Machete Called Victim Racial Epithets During IL Hate Crime Attack: Police

The man admitted to attacking the victim with a machete over money, according to police.

DEKALB, IL — A DeKalb man faces multiple felony charges after he attacked a person he was living with using a machete while employing racial epithets, according to police.

Joshua M. Boyer, 44, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated domestic battery, hate crime and domestic battery, police said.

Officers responded around 12:30 a.m. Thursday to the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive for a machete attack and found the victim suffering from a severe injury to his right forearm, according to police. The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said.

Boyer approached an officer and admitted to attacking the victim with a machete over money, according to police.

Witnesses told officers that Boyer made racial epithets toward the victim and threatened to kill him, police said. The machete used in the attack was recovered, according to police.
