More than 122,000 cases of Gatorade distributed in Illinois and dozens of other states are being recalled because certain bottles contain food dyes that were not declared on the product labels.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration reports that PepsiCo Inc. initiated the recall on Sept. 25, with the FDA classifying it as a Class II recall on Friday.
The recall covers 122,021 cases of 28-ounce bottles of four Gatorade varieties: Lemon Lime, Lemon Lime Zero, Orange and Orange Zero.
The FDA says the affected products contain undeclared Yellow No. 5 and/or Yellow No. 6.
Illinois is among 37 states where the recalled drinks were distributed. Other states include: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Jersey, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wisconsin.
The affected bottles carry best-by dates ranging from April to June of 2027.
The FDA describes a Class II recall as when a product may cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences, while the probability of serious health consequences is considered remote.
The FDA says Yellow No. 5 and Yellow No. 6 are federally approved color additives, but federal labeling rules require their presence to be disclosed.
Yellow No. 5, also known as tartrazine, can cause allergic-type reactions in a small number of sensitive people.
